Editorial Illustration

I love building a body of images around a complex idea. I also enjoy the rapid pace of working on editorial illustrations; some assignments can be as short as a 48 hour turnaround.

As an editorial illustrator, I create visual metaphors to add depth to stories. Working with editors and writers gives me the unique chance to learn directly from content experts. Each editorial experience is a mini crash course in that particular topic, from learning about prison labor camps in Western China to gerrymandering in North Carolina.

How to Work With Me

Email me with your budget, schedule, deliverable, and a version of the written piece - as close to finished as you can share.

Editorial Sketch Process

The editorial illustration process is pretty straightforward. After we’ve settled on terms, I read the written piece and submit a couple rough sketches. The editor picks one (sometimes with revisions) which I then develop into a finished image. Here are a few examples of the sketches I submitted and the finals that came out of them.

I submitted 3 different sketches for this piece in the Guardian by Angela Qian about being separated from family. The editor chose the first sketch, which emphasizes the feeling of existing in two separate worlds.

This cover for Ditto Magazine was meant to reflect the whole issue, rather than one specific article or text. The theme was Taiwan and family, so my 3 cover solutions reflected some of the scenes I’ve seen when I’m back in Taiwan.
