Mural for Urban Community School

I am the child of immigrants. I grew up hearing whispered comments like “They're everywhere these days!" and how migrants must be contained. These memories returned to me as I learned about land management and the drive to eradicate invasive plants and contain nonnative species.

I want to challenge the assumption that dandelions are “just weeds”. Many see these plants as pests because of how easily they spread, but I view them as resilient survivors. Dandelions take root and thrive in the most undesirable places. They are also nutritious to eat, have long been used in medicine, and help to aerate soil and prevent erosion.

Let us stay curious and question our preconceived notions about the world around us.

LAND Studio partnered with Urban Community School in 2021 to commission a site-specific mural on W.47 and Lorain in Ohio City, a neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio.

This design was digitally created and installed with heat applied vinyl over brick.

This site is home not only to Urban Community School, but to a variety of other businesses and organizations such as MetroHealth, Urban Squash, and Gallagher Family Early Education center.
